September 28: a series on giving
What does it mean to give? Giving can be considered an act of community service, and community service is defined as “work done by a person or group of people that benefits others” (Sarikas). It is especially important to help others in this time if you can. They can be simple acts like checking up on a friend, writing a letter, or buying groceries for an elderly neighbor (in a safe way of course).
This unit aims to help those who enjoy community service as a way of maintaining wellbeing. We will have lots of opportunities, virtual and real, that you can browse through. This unit will also be separating opportunities into categories, such as service oriented work (helping others), environmentally oriented work, and educational oriented work. There are plenty of opportunities out there even while we are at home, and Decompress will do its best to put them in one place for you.
1. What are your favorite ways of helping others?
2. When you help someone, how does it make you feel? Try to recall a time and a place where you helped someone and the emotions you felt then.
3. Why do you think that community service makes us calmer, more content individuals?
what’s the connection between mental wellness and community service?
Helping others makes us happier
Decompress has mentioned this a lot - the fact that helping others makes us happier. Watch this video that explains that it matters how we help others for our mental wellness.
